What to Wear for Golf: A Woman's Guide to Course Dress Codes and Outfits

FAIRLIAR 26SS editorial - golfer in ivory collared knit, flared skirt and ribbon visor kneeling on the green

Playing your first round — or your first round at a new club — and not sure what to wear? Here is a practical answer, from the team at FAIRLIAR.

The short answer

For women, almost every golf course welcomes: a collared or otherwise neat top, a golf skirt (typically around knee-to-mid-thigh length with built-in shorts or lining), tailored pants or shorts, and golf or spikeless shoes. Avoid denim, gym leggings worn alone, and anything you would wear to the beach. When in doubt, dress slightly more polished than you think you need — no one has ever been turned away for looking too put-together.

What dress codes actually require

Most public courses are relaxed; private and country clubs are stricter. The common rules: tops should have a collar or a clearly tailored neckline, bottoms should be golf-specific (skirts, skorts, tailored shorts or pants), and shoes should be golf shoes or clean sneakers — never open-toe. Some clubs ask that hats be worn brim-forward and removed indoors. If you're unsure, the pro shop will happily tell you before your round.

A first-round outfit that works anywhere

A safe, elegant formula: a collared knit or sleeveless top with a neat neckline, a pleated golf skirt with built-in lining (or straight-fit golf pants), and a structured visor. Every piece works within any dress code we know of — and it photographs beautifully on the course.

Adjusting for weather

  • Hot days: breathable, quick-dry tops and lighter skirts; add a visor for sun cover.
  • Cool mornings: layer a fine-gauge cardigan or vest over your top — core warmth with your shoulders free to swing.
  • Wind or drizzle: a lightweight zip-up layer you can shed by the back nine.

What to skip

Denim of any kind, plain athletic leggings without a skirt or shorts over them, strapless or spaghetti-strap tops, and metal spikes (most courses allow soft spikes only). Practical extras worth bringing: a glove, sunscreen, and a layer for the wind.
